Information about the Speed Limit Map

This is an application that shows a colour coded map of speed limits. To see the legend of the map (what colour equals what speed), please select the "Legend" button.

Lines on the Map

Solid lines represent a road where the speed limit is always the displayed colour.

Double solid lines represent a "conditional" speed limit (usually time based). The outer colour is the default speed limit, and the inner colour is the speed limit that activates some times. For instance, a school zone in Canada would be blue on the outside (50) and pink on the inside (30).

Solid/dashed lines represent an advisory speed limit. This is a speed limit that is only suggested by the local authority and is not legally required. For instance, this occurs on motorway on/offramps and sharp corners. The solid line is the true/legal speed limit, and the dashed line is the recommended speed limit.

Unparseable speeds

If the OSM editor has written a string for a speed limit that is not understandable by this website, it will display the line as white and the speed limit will be "-2 km/h"

Managing Resources

This application has the ability to download several megabytes worth of data with extended use, especially near well-mapped cities like Montreal and Seattle. It is likely that your computer will become laggy if too much data is downloaded. There are two features available to prevent this, but both are manually controlled. If you intend to scroll somewhere across the map and you do not want to download all of the data, check the "Suspend All Downloads" box. This will stop the program from downloading new sections when you move the map. You can also press the Clean button to delete all lines currently on the map.
